Sealing

2 Corinthians 1:21-22 — Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.

2 Corinthians 5:5 — God … has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.

Ephesians 1:13-14 — And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession – to the praise of his glory.

Ephesians 4:30 — And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

NOTE:  The above three passages provide us with eternal security.  See also John 10:27-30;  Romans 8:29-30;  1 Corinthians 11:30-32.

Revelation 7:3-4, 14 — "Do not harm the land or the sea or the trees until we put a seal on the foreheads of the servants of our God." Then I heard the number of those who were sealed: 144,000 from all the tribes of Israel. … "These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb."

NOTE:  The above passage refers to believers in general during the church age.  See Romans 4:11-12; 9:6, and Final Events Timeline.

Anointing

NOTE:  The subject of the anointing of the Holy Spirit is related to his indwelling, sealing, and positional baptism.

Acts 4:27 — Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed.

Luke 4:18-21, Jesus reading Isaiah 61:1-2a — "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." Then he [Jesus] rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him, and he began by saying to them, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."

The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor  (Isaiah 61:1-2a)

NOTE:  Luke does not seem to give a precise quotation of Jesus' reading (it does not strictly match present versions of either the Masoretic text or the Septuagint.)  Nevertheless, Jesus' anointing "fulfills" Isaiah's anointing, that is, it parallels Isaiah's anointing (see the paper "Fulfill," Matthew 1:22 and Isaiah 7:14).  And believers in our present church age are also anointed by the Holy Spirit, as shown in the passages below, which further demonstrates the continuity of the Holy Spirit's ministry over the ages.

2 Corinthians 1:21 — (see above)

1 John 2:20, 27 — But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth. … As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit – just as it has taught you, remain in him.

1 John 3:24 — Those who obey his commands live in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.

1 John 4:1-7 — Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world. 4 You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. 5 They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood. 7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.

Filling

Ephesians 5:18-19a — Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Speak to one another

NOTE:  There is this command to be filled with the Holy Spirit, but there is no command regarding the Spirit's positional baptism, sealing, or anointing.

Luke 1:15, regarding John the Baptist — … he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from birth.

Luke 1:41-42, regarding Elizabeth — When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!

Luke 1:67 — His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied

Luke 4:1-2 — Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the desert, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil.

Acts 2:4 — All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

Acts 4:8 — Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: "Rulers and elders of the people! …"

Acts 4:31 — After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.

Acts 6:5, 8, 10 — … They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit … Now Stephen, a man full of God's grace and power, did great wonders and miraculous signs among the people. … they could not stand up against his wisdom or the Spirit by whom he spoke.

Acts 7:55-56 — But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. "Look," he said, "I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God."

Acts 9:17 — Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord – Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here – has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit."

Acts 11:24 — He [Barnabas] was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.

Acts 13:9 — Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at Elymas and said

Acts 13:52 — And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

NOTE:  The actual events of being filled with the Holy Spirit (as opposed to prophecies or descriptions of character) typically include speaking!

For discussion — Satan filling?

Acts 5:3 — Then Peter said, "Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?

NOTE:  The Greek word for "filled" (πληροω, plēroō) in this verse is the same word used in Ephesians 5:18 and Acts 13:52.  Was Ananias saved?

Living by the Spirit (summary passages)

Galatians 5:16-26 — So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. 17 For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law. 19 The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

Romans 8:5-17 — Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; 7 the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. 8 Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. 9 You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you. 12 Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation – but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. 13 For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, 14 because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father." 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs – heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
